Afraid

I’m not afraid of anything.

Except the things I can’t see.

The moments that haven’t happened.

And what it would feel like to be free.

I’m not afraid of heights or snakes.

Not even death itself.

Yet my breath catches at the thought

Of never finding myself.

Don’t look down before you jump

Is how I find my strength.

But before I let you in

I’ll be sure to search within.

A broken heart can be reshaped.

Though trust is not so simple

You cannot fear letting others down

When you are never needed.

I expect the worst so I cannot fear

What was always meant to be.

But how do I show you

That you should be afraid of me.

If I were you, I’d leave too.

The darkness that lingers

Doesn’t slow down

Because you tried to love it away.
