If I were the moon

I wish I were the moon,
so you’d miss me throughout the day
and seek me out
when it ends.

You’d look at me and wonder
how I shine
with no light of my own.

You’d tell me the secrets
you tell no one else—
what you’re most afraid of,
what you want
more than life itself.

Surrounded by stars,
you’d still look for me.

And when I disappeared,
you’d wait for my return.

As you drifted to sleep,
you’d feel my pull
beneath your skin,
your body answering
like water to the tide.

And when you woke,
you’d search for me,
knowing I was there
even when
you couldn’t see me.
