He gave me flowers,
and that’s how I knew
our love would end.
Twelve roses,
tied with a ribbon,
placed in a vase
where no amount
of water or sun
could keep the petals from falling
or the stems from sagging.
I’d press the blooms
between pages,
preserving what was
while knowing
a memory can’t bring them
back to life.
